DESIGNATED STROKE CENTER

According to the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke is the third leading cause of death in the State of New York and in the U.S. as a whole. It is also a leading cause of serious long-term disability.

However, recent advances in the understanding of stroke-induced brain damage indicate that prompt, appropriate medical treatment reduces brain injury and helps patients to recover earlier, with minimal disruption of brain functions.

As a result of this information, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has designated Stroke Centers in those hospitals that meet nationally-recognized criteria. Because it has the required facilities and specially trained staff, and adheres to the State’s standards for quality, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center has been chosen by NYSDOH to be one of the designated Stroke Centers in this region.

The Wyckoff Stroke Center is under the direction of Dr. Anil Mendiratta, who is board certified in Neurology and Psychiatry with added qualifications in Clinical Neurophysiology. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology. The other members of the Stroke Team include Emergency Department physicians, Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Radiologists, Physiatrists, Intensive Care physicians, Registered Nurses, a Speech Therapist and other technical support staff. Members of this team are always available and work expeditiously to identify the nature of the stroke and to provide the highest quality of care as established by NYSDOH stroke protocol.

Our Stroke Center provides excellent care and appropriate interventions, as indicated. After discharge, patients are followed by their private doctors in consultation with the Stroke Center Neurologists. The Neurologists work with other specialists in Rehabilitation Medicine and Physiatry, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, and Critical Care Medicine to provide comprehensive care for the patient.

Appointments to Wyckoff’s Neurology Clinic may be scheduled by calling (718) 963-7266 during normal business hours.
