The Tumor Registry is a system to monitor all types of cancers diagnosed or treated at our institution, and is a critical element in the evaluation of cancer care. The Tumor Registry collects demographic, cancer identification, treatment, and follow-up data on each eligible cancer patient, required by the NYSDOH Cancer Registry (NYSCR). Additionally these data contribute to treatment planning, staging, and continuity of care for patients. Accurate and complete registry data allow for cancer program and administrative planning allocating hospital resources. It is also a valuable resource for research investigations.
Cancer Committee
The cancer committee is responsible for registry supervision and quality control of registry data.
Registry Operations
The registry operation meets the standards as defined in NYSCR Reporting Manual and Facility Oncology Registry Data (FORDS) of the Commission on Cancer for the following areas:
- Staging systems
- Abstracting
- Accession Register
- Case Eligibility
- Case finding
- Confidentiality, release of information and request logs
- Follow-up
- Patient Index
- Procedure Manual
- Quality Control
- Reference date
- Retention of documents
- Suspense list
In addition, the Registry arranges the weekly Cancer Conferences and quarterly Cancer Committee meetings
Continuing Education
The Tumor Registrar is trained and knowledgeable in cancer registry operations, and is a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR credential). The registrar attends educational programs conducted by the NYSCR and various private cancer registry associations and is awarded CE credits as required by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA).
Abstracting
Abstracting is completed within six months from date of initial diagnosis as required by NYSCR.
Confidentiality
Confidential patient information is maintained in the registry data base subject to HIPAA guidelines
Follow-up
Long term follow up is essential to evaluate outcomes of cancer care. Accurate follow-up data enable the facility to compare outcomes with regional, state, or national statistics.
Data Reporting
Complete data for all eligible cases are submitted to the New York State Cancer Registry (NYSCR).
