The Life Safety Department is responsible for the development, organization and direction of the medical center’s Safety Program to create a safe and healthful environment which will safeguard the lives and welfare of the center’s patients, visitors and employees, including all associated clinics

Providing for a safe and healthful environment while protecting all buildings and grounds includes monitoring, inspecting and supervising repairs made to all fire suppression/related equipment such as the sprinkler system, fire alarm system, fire extinguishers, fire doors, fire pump and means of egress.

The focal point to accomplish these services lies in ensuring compliance with the standards of Joint Commission, OSHA, all Federal, State and Local and other regulatory agencies relating to Fire and Safety.

To ensure compliance with these regulations and standards, the Life Safety Officer implements various programs overseeing the safe disposal of hazardous materials, development and ongoing review of the Life/Safety Manual, orientation and in-service training for all employees, and development of hospital wide policies and procedures.

Orientation and in-service training encompasses Fire & Safety Preparedness, Disaster Preparedness, Electrical Safety Awareness and The Hazard Communication Program.

Effectiveness of these programs is evaluated while conducting fire drills, disaster drills, safety inspections and environmental rounds.

The Life Safety Department’s Director, acting as the Chairman of the Environment of Care Committee (OSHA Coordinator) has the opportunity to meet with the assigned committee members to address, discuss and determine appropriate corrective actions for various safety concerns.
